Independent site. ArtCraft Review is an unofficial, independent guide. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by ArtCraft, Storyteller.ai, Brandon Thomas, Adobe or Microsoft. We host no files: every download link points to the official site getartcraft.com or the official github.com/storytold organization.

Short answer: based on what the project publishes, the official ArtCraft builds look as safe as other new open-source apps. They are open source, signed, and come with checksums. The two real risks are fake downloads and alpha-quality software that can damage files. We haven't run an independent security audit, and we know of no formal third-party audit.

What makes the official builds trustworthy

What about antivirus or sandbox warnings?

Brand-new builds often trigger Windows SmartScreen because few people have downloaded that exact file. Automated sandboxes can also flag normal installer behavior: for example, a public Joe Sandbox report on a PhotoCraft 0.5.0 MSI listed generic behavioral signatures, while the antivirus columns in the same report showed 0% detections. Treat such reports as prompts to verify, not proof either way. The checksum from the official release tells you whether your file is genuine.

The real risk #1: fake ArtCraft downloads

Trending free software attracts impostors. Look-alike sites, "ArtCraft downloader" repos and "cracked" versions have appeared. The apps are free, so a "crack" makes no sense and should be a red flag. Unrelated apps called "PhotoCraft" or "Photo Craft" also exist in app stores. Only trust getartcraft.com and github.com/storytold/….

A real example (October 2026)

A public launch-tracking site lists an entry titled "PhotoCraft-Photoshop," sourced from a GitHub repository and launched October 10, 2026. Its description calls it an "Official free download" and offers a "Local zip" for Windows of "v0.5.0," while the official PhotoCraft release on GitHub was v0.18.0 (October 31, 2026). That wording doesn't match how the project distributes PhotoCraft: official builds are published as releases of github.com/storytold/photocraft (MSI installers or portable ZIPs named photocraft-<version>-windows-…, with SHA256SUMS.txt) or linked from getartcraft.com. We haven't analyzed that file and won't link to it. The lesson: a page that says "official" isn't official unless the file comes from storytold and its checksum matches. Checked Nov 1, 2026

The real risk #2: alpha software and your files

The apps are labeled early alpha or "in development." XDA noted that PhotoCraft's PSDs "aren't yet reliably accepted by Photoshop." Work on copies, keep backups, and don't overwrite your only copy of an important PSD, DOCX, XLSX or DWG with a file saved by an alpha app.

The project says its apps are clean-room re-implementations with no Adobe code, built from public specifications, and that each project is not affiliated with Adobe (CineD). Creative Bloq noted that Adobe's and Microsoft's lawyers will likely be watching. We are not lawyers, and there has been no court ruling on this. Using open-source software you downloaded legitimately is ordinary, but the projects' legal position on look-and-feel is unsettled.

Safety checklist

  1. Download only from getartcraft.com or github.com/storytold.
  2. Compare the SHA-256 with SHA256SUMS.txt from the same release (how to).
  3. Prefer the official launcher, which verifies checksums automatically.
  4. Back up files before editing them in an alpha app.
  5. Be careful with any site that asks for payment to "unlock" the free apps.

Privacy of the AI studio

ArtCraft Studio, the generative AI part, uses cloud image and video models, so prompts and images you generate are processed by those services. Read the official policies on getartcraft.com before uploading sensitive material.

Frequently asked questions

Is ArtCraft a virus?

There's no evidence that the official builds from getartcraft.com or github.com/storytold are malware. They are open source, code-signed and checksummed. Unofficial download sites don't carry those guarantees.

Is ArtCraft safe to download?

Yes, if you download from the official site or GitHub and verify the SHA-256 checksum. Avoid third-party download, installer and 'cracked' sites.

Does ArtCraft collect my data?

The official site says the Crafting Apps run locally on your own files with no cloud round-trips, and FigCraft claims no telemetry. ArtCraft Studio's AI generation uses cloud models.

Why did my antivirus flag ArtCraft?

New, unsigned or rarely downloaded builds can cause false positives or SmartScreen warnings. Check that the file came from an official release and that its checksum matches.

Can ArtCraft damage my files?

It's alpha software, so it can. For example, PhotoCraft's PSD output isn't always accepted by Photoshop. Work on copies and keep backups.

Is PhotoCraft safe?

PhotoCraft is part of ArtCraft, and the same rules apply: download from storytold/photocraft or getartcraft.com, verify the checksum, and back up important PSDs.
