ArtCraft's Crafting Apps are free, open-source apps modeled closely on Adobe Creative Cloud: PhotoCraft for Photoshop, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, VectorCraft for Illustrator, EffectCraft for After Effects, DesignCraft for InDesign and PdfCraft for Acrobat Pro. Reviewers describe the UI as "a spitting image" (XDA). But the project's own numbers show they aren't yet a full replacement.

PhotoCraft vs Photoshop
As reported by InfoQ, PhotoCraft's roadmap (October 11, 2026) counted all 628 of 628 menus wired, 56 of 68 tools, and 30 of 35 panels, for about 76% feature breadth against Photoshop 2026, but only about 45% "readiness for real work." XDA adds that it is slower than Photoshop at almost everything the team has timed and has no plugin support. The README lists the biggest gaps as AI/generative features, missing tools, typography depth, pro workflows and plug-in compatibility.
FilmCraft vs Premiere Pro
CineD reports about 86% feature breadth against Premiere Pro 26.5.2 and about 56% ready for real work. The gaps: speed on large footage, no Premiere project import, no VST3/Audio Units/OpenFX plugins, limited export codecs (no AV1), and no Camera RAW. XDA notes Lumetri, keys and masks still run on the CPU.
LightCraft vs Lightroom
The official page calls LightCraft "an open-source photo library and raw developer that runs on your machine," with status "in development." Creative Bloq's hands-on test found problems across the suite, so test it on copies of your catalog first.
Beyond Adobe: Office and CAD clones
The team has also released WordCraft (.docx), GridCraft (.xlsx, 500+ functions, PivotTables), DeckCraft (presentations) and CADCraft (command line, object snaps, layers, dimensions). See the app table on our ArtCraft overview.
Pros and cons vs Adobe
Pros
- Free, no subscription or account
- Open source (MIT/Apache-2.0), auditable
- Native Rust apps, ~50 MB each
- macOS, Windows, Linux and browser
- Familiar Adobe/Office-style layouts
Cons
- Early alpha; ~45–56% 'ready for real work'
- No Photoshop/VST3/OpenFX plugins
- PSD saves not always accepted by Photoshop
- Slower than Adobe on most timed tasks
- Legal position of look-alike UIs untested
Who should switch?
- Try ArtCraft if you're a hobbyist, student or Linux user, you do light retouching, layout tweaks, quick edits or culling (XDA's view), or you want to drop a subscription.
- Stay with Adobe if you exchange PSD or Premiere projects with clients, depend on plugins, or need stability for paid deadlines.
- Best of both: install ArtCraft alongside Adobe, since it's free and light, and check its progress every few releases. Updates are frequent: CineD saw FilmCraft go from 0.4.0 to 0.6.0 within weeks.
Other free Adobe alternatives
Mature free options such as GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, darktable, DaVinci Resolve (free edition) and Scribus are older and more stable. ArtCraft's draw is that it copies Adobe's familiar layout and shortcuts, so there's "nothing to relearn," as the official site puts it.
Frequently asked questions
Is ArtCraft better than Adobe?
Not yet for professional work. It's free, open source and light, but its own roadmaps estimate about 45% (PhotoCraft) to 56% (FilmCraft) readiness for real work as of October 2026.
Is ArtCraft an Adobe clone?
ArtCraft's apps are clean-room re-implementations modeled on Adobe's interfaces and workflows. They contain no Adobe code, according to the project, and aren't affiliated with Adobe.
Can PhotoCraft open PSD files?
Yes. PhotoCraft reads and writes PSD files, but PSDs it saves aren't yet reliably accepted by Photoshop, so keep the originals.
Is there an ArtCraft Lightroom alternative?
Yes. LightCraft is ArtCraft's open-source photo library and raw developer, currently in development.
Does ArtCraft have a Premiere Pro alternative?
Yes. FilmCraft is the video editor. It can't import Premiere projects, host audio/video plugins or handle Camera RAW yet.
